GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the optimization of content so it gets cited by AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. It is the counterpart to SEO for the age of AI search.

While SEO targets ranking positions in classic search engines, GEO ensures that AI systems pick up and cite content as a source. Key levers are clear, answer-first phrasing, structured data, citability of individual passages, and accessibility for AI crawlers. Files such as llms.txt and ai.txt help AI systems understand and correctly use content. GEO is gaining importance as more users get answers directly from AI rather than from search result lists.
